eBay Offers A Mobile Search Shortcut For Online - Deon Designs

Last month, I touched on several ways that businesses could use apps as an alternate channel to reach mobile searchers. Online retailers have a couple opportunities to use apps in this way, by tapping into the eBay and Amazon marketplaces. Let?s take a closer look at eBay, and some strategies for using it to extend the reach of your existing catalog.

Starting At The Desktop

Before mobile was part of the equation, there was a well-established practice for leveraging eBay for online retail. Of course, it goes without saying that many retailers use eBay as their sole storefront, taking advantage of the existing audience, feedback scores, and shipping options to make DIY selling pretty easy, even for the novice.

But, when retailers start expecting heavy business, eBay?s fees and commissions start becoming painful. For many product categories, the combined eBay and PayPal fees can approach 15%.

For this reason, high-volume sellers often elect to run their own stores on other platforms. But, even these retailers will sometimes keep a toehold in eBay, to get access to their huge audience and drum-up some brand awareness.

Toeholds In Mobile Search

It?s this toehold strategy that translates well to mobile. For a successful store with a conventional desktop-oriented website, jumping into the mobile market is a daunting task. The three biggest questions facing you:

  • Is there a market for my products among mobile shoppers?
  • How do I reach those mobile shoppers?
  • What will be the upfront and ongoing costs?

In short: will it be worth the effort?

The toehold strategy can help you get past this roadblock. As with desktop-based retail, eBay offers access to a huge audience, and the comScore numbers for their mobile activities are just as impressive.

The fee structure that causes so much heartburn in a desktop scenario still applies here ? unlike PPC advertising, there?s no price break for posting products on eBay Mobile. But, while eBay?s cost equation won?t change in this situation, yours certainly will.

Buy.com listings on eBay Mobile

Even the largest online retailers make use of eBay to expand their customer base. Buy.com currently has nearly 1.6 million listings on eBay.

Why Buy The Cow?

The biggest hurdle to reaching mobile customers is making your store mobile friendly. If you were lucky enough to build your store on a platform that supports mobile from the start ? great! You may only need a few content tweaks to optimize your SKUs for mobile shoppers.

But, many platforms aren?t mobile ready, and so, Web development costs need to be factored in. As we all know, quality development work isn?t cheap, and that applies doubly to mobile development.

This is why eBay?s fee structure suddenly makes a lot of sense. You get a mobile storefront and instant access to a large audience of shoppers, all without the upfront planning and investment that a mobile website would require. Suddenly, that 15% doesn?t sound so bad.

Best of all, eBay gives you the ability to start early, see how mobile shoppers react to your products, and run experiments to see how you can meet their needs. With those learnings in your pocket (and some revenue, too) you can make more confident decisions about your next step in mobile retail.

Jeff Scott ? Favorite Things of 2012

As 2013 comes around the corner, here's a quick look back at my favorite things of 2013.

2012 was a tumultuous year for iOS and for Apps. The App Store passed 1 million apps approved, the iPad was updated twice and the iPad mini introduced, we saw iOS 6 released to mixed reviews, and we saw an understated but huge shake up in the organizational structure and management level at Apple. Here?s a quick look back at some of my favorite things of 2012.

?

iPad mini

?

I?ve always thought that the iPad was an amazing device. It truly did change they way I work and play the way nothing had since my first laptop. But the iPad mini revolutionized my work yet again by making it more portable, therefore convenient and easy to use. While Macworld re-used the uninformed assessment that many had of the original iPad deeming the mini as a ?consumption device,? yet I create almost as much as I consume on the iPad mini.

As it stands now, I have a 64GB iPad mini with LTE that I take almost everywhere with me. I use it to write (the first draft of this list was done on the iPad mini), to read and send email, Twitter, and Facebook. And I use it to play games. It?s become my gaming device of choice.

Sure there are some things that can be improved with the iPad mini. And we?ll see those improvements. But for a device dismissed by so many, it has quickly become my most used tool.

?

The Walking Dead: The Game

?

No other game I have played in my life has forged the emotional connection I had while playing The Walking Dead: The Game. A true triumph in game story telling that draws you in deeper and deeper with each of your plot modifying moves. Telltale Games has done an amazing job with this game. I?m not the first to say this, but Walking Dead: The Game on the iPad was one of my favorite things from 2012, and perhaps one of my favorite gaming experiences ever: an accolade I don?t throw around lightly considering that I?ve been playing video games for three plus decades.

If by some strange occurrence you haven?t played through Walking Dead: The Game from Telltale Games yet, run, do not walk, to the App Store and grab it now.

?

Maturation of iPad Core Games

?

Just as the spread of free to play grinding ?games? is one of my least favorite things of 2012, the counterpoint to that is the new wave of core games on iPad. I wholeheartedly believe that the iPad, not the iPhone (or Android) is where console games will migrate when they realize that the next wave of consoles will be too expensive. The iPad is a powerful line of machines and a great way to experience games. Take a look at our Top 30 Games of 2012 for examples of some of these great games.

?

Apple Executive Shake-Up

?

This may seem like an odd favorite, but I think it?s for the best. Like pulling off a bandaid, it had to be done; might as well get it over with.

iOS has been a bit stagnant and two-minded in its development, straddling the line between originality and familiarity. The executive shakeup and organization restructure will make a big difference in the future for Apple and iOS. iOS the the future for Apple, and reorganizing the company is a great step to build it in the future.

?

Google Getting Serious on iOS

?

You could almost read the internal struggle happening in Google via their iOS apps. They started strong, before Android really took off. Then they pulled back as they only wanted to support Android. Now, they have come around and are starting to support iOS again, at times faster and better than they do even Android, though you can probably blame the snail-like update cycle on Android for part of that.

This year, we?ve seen the updated Google Search with it?s amazing voice search, and the Google+ app got updated faster than the Android app at times?the current version is a fairly well-done social app.

While we had heard for a while that Google was trying to get Chrome approved for iOS, it finally showed up, and it quickly became my browser of choice. Gmail for iOS was a bit of a joke in the original version, but the latest version has shown how far Google has come as it responds to nearly every feature request people wanted.

We of course can?t forget the recent release of Google Maps for iOS, a really well done map app that Google believes is better than their Android version. I don?t know about that, but it is a damn good effort.

?

2013?

?

2013 has the potential to be even crazier for iOS and the App Store. I am excited every morning to get up and be able to cover it. Thanks to all of you, the crazy ones that keep reading. You?re the reason we get to do it! Happy New Year and here?s looking forward to a great 2013!

Kanye West Announces At Concert That Kim ... - Business Insider

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? A kid for Kimye: Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are expecting their first child.

The rapper announced at a concert Sunday night that his girlfriend is pregnant. He told the crowd of more than 5,000 at Revel Resort's Ovation Hall in song form: "Now you having my baby."

The crowd roared. And so did people on the Internet.

The news instantly went viral on Twitter and Facebook, with thousands posting and commenting on the expecting couple.

Most of the Kardashian clan also tweeted about the news, including Kim's sisters and mother. Kourtney Kardashian wrote: "Another angel to welcome to our family. Overwhelmed with excitement!"

West, 35, also told concertgoers to congratulate his "baby mom" and that this was the "most amazing thing."

Representatives for West and Kardashian, 32, didn't immediately respond to emails about the pregnancy.

The rapper and reality TV star went public in March.

Kardashian married NBA player Kris Humphries in August 2011 and their divorce is not finalized.

West's Sunday night show was his third consecutive performance at Revel. He took the stage for nearly two hours, performing hits like "Good Life," ''Jesus Walks" and "Clique" in an all-white ensemble with two band mates.

PFT: Cardinals fire coach Whisenhunt, GM Graves

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Atlanta FalconsGetty Images

Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano said Monday that he thinks quarterback Josh Freeman will win Super Bowls over the course of his career, but he stopped short of saying that Freeman will continue to be the team?s starter next season.

Schiano was complimentary of Freeman?s season during his postmortem on the Bucs? 7-9 season, but he also said that he wants to evaluate Freeman before the start of next season to make sure that he?s the right quarterback for the team in the future. Part of that evaluation will be to bring in competition for Freeman in the offseason.

?What I can say is, a 4,000-yard passer, a touchdown record ? there?s a lot of things you say, ?Wow.? Are there things that frustrate you? Yeah. There?s things that frustrate him, too. And I?m not ducking the question, because quite frankly, I really like Josh Freeman. But I want to make sure I don?t get ahead of my skis at all here and really evaluate every single thing to what?s best for this organization,? Schiano said, via the Tampa Bay Times. ?Do I think Josh Freeman is going to win Super Bowls in this league? I do. So, I hope that happens here. But again, at the end of the day, I have to evaluate everything before I can say that?s what we?re doing.?The one thing I do believe in is competition at every spot, including the quarterback so I want to have as many good players on our football team as we can at every single position. It?s a little different in the NFL.?

Freeman was all over the place during the 2012 season. He struggled a little early then went on a five-game spurt where he threw 13 touchdowns and one interception before posting consecutive four interception outings in Weeks 15 and 16. The end result was better than 2011, to be sure, but Freeman remains an athletically gifted but erratic quarterback after four seasons.

Next year will be a big one for the quarterback as it is the final year of the deal he signed as a rookie. If Freeman can?t raise his game, he might not get another deal from the Buccaneers and, if Schiano follows through on his plan, he might not even be their starter next season.
