Friday Food Porn: Ikura Rice in Miyagi, Japan
A little something to make you hungry this Friday and also to whet your appetites for a series of stories I am working on currently. I just came back from a week touring Tohoku, which has some of the most amazing hot spring spas, sake breweries, and seafood in Japan. Tohoku is also the region most devastated by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. The decadent dish pictured above was served to me as the last course of an amazing meal in a hotel in Minamisanriku, a town which was almost entirely wiped out by the tsunami. Ikura and abalone are specialties here. Earlier in the meal, I had a whole abalone, grilled and served with butter and soy. This last course of ikura and some sliced raw abalone was simply amazing.
