Carney Refuses To Answer If Obama Will Take Up GOP Congresswoman?s Offer To Skeet Shooting Match?

But Obama loves skeet shooting, I don?t get it.

Via The Hill:

White House press secretary Jay Carney did not appear impressed by Rep. Marsha Blackburn?s (R-Tenn.) offer of a skeet shooting challenge to President Obama.

Carney was asked during Wednesday?s press briefing if he had any response to the Tennessee lawmaker, who questioned Obama?s claim in an interview over the weekend that he regularly practiced at Camp David?s shooting range.

?I have none,? Carney said dryly, before quickly moving to a different question.

Obama said in an interview with the New Republic that at Camp David, ?we do skeet shooting all the time.? It was an attempt by Obama to explain that he sympathized with sportsmen during the debate over new gun control laws.

Google details Pwnium 3, targets Chrome OS

Google's Chrome Security team has taking the wraps of its its latest Pwnium competition. This time out, the target is Chrome OS on a Samsung Series 5 550, and as ever, the company's putting its money (and nerd cred) where its mouth is, offering up a $Pi million in rewards (that's a lofty $3.14159 million) for the third round of the competition. Amongst the payouts are $110,000 for a "browser or system level compromise in guest mode or as a logged-in user, delivered via a web page" and $150,000 for a "compromise with device persistence -- guest to guest with interim reboot, delivered via a web page." The company is also putting some weight behind the upcoming Pwn2Own competition, which goes down at CanSecWest in Vancouver in March. More info on both can be found at the source link below.

Apple Releases iOS 6.1, Improves Siri and iTunes Match

Apple Releases iOS 6.1, Improves Siri and iTunes MatchToday Apple released iOS 6.1, adding improvements to Siri and iTunes Match (among other things). Perhaps more exciting, however, is the greater likelihood that we'll finally see an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.

While the update may let you buy movie tickets with your voice, make iTunes Match work a little better, and add LTE to several new international markets, iTunes 6.1 is the update jailbreaks have been waiting for. Generally a jailbreak isn't released until Apple releases their first major point update. Now that it's here, we'll hopefully see a jailbreak option surface sometime in February. In the meantime, however, you can enjoy some improved features and bug fixes courtesy of Apple. The update is available in iTunes or through your device directly in the Settings app (General -> Software Update).

(AP Photo/Ben Curtis)

(AP) ? Timbuktu, the fabled desert city where retreating Muslim extremists destroyed ancient manuscripts, was a center of Islamic learning hundreds of years before Columbus landed in the Americas.

It is not known how many of the priceless documents were destroyed by al Qaida-linked fighters who set ablaze a state-of-the-art library built with South African funding to conserve the brittle, camel-hide bound manuscripts from the harshness of the Sahara Desert climate and preserve them so researchers can study them.

News of the destruction came Monday from the mayor of Timbuktu. With its Islamic treasures and centuries-old mud-walled buildings including an iconic mosque, Timbuktu is a U.N.-designated World Heritage Site.

The damage caused by the fleeing Islamists was limited, but irreplaceable treasures were lost.

Most of the manuscripts, which are as many as 900 years old, were gathered between the 1980s and 2000 from all over Mali for the Ahmed Baba Institute for Higher Learning and Islamic Research, which moved into its new home in 2009.

The library held about 30,000 manuscripts of which only about one third had been catalogued, according to its Web site. The world may never know what it has lost.

The manuscripts cover subjects ranging from science, astrology and medicine to history, theology, grammar and geography. All are in Arabic script, in the Arabic language and African languages.

They date back to the late 12th century, the start of a 300-year golden age for Timbuktu as a spiritual and intellectual capital for the propagation of Islam on the continent.

Michael Covitt, chairman of the Malian Manuscript Foundation, called them "the most important find since the Dead Sea Scrolls."

Tens of thousands more manuscripts ? no one knows how many ? were kept at other libraries and private homes in Timbuktu. Some are believed to have been secreted against the Islamist fighters, who began their desecration of the city by systematically razing the 15th-century mausoleums of several Sufi saints in July. Among the tombs they destroyed is that of Sidi Mahmoudou, a saint who died in 955, according to a UNESCO website.

The International Criminal Court at The Hague has described the destruction of Timbuktu's heritage as a possible war crime. Timbuktu has been attacked and conquered in the past, most recently in 1591 by Moroccan troops who sacked the city and burned libraries. But the city recovered and gained fame as a place where people from different races and creeds could live together harmoniously.

Even before Europeans landed in the Americas, Timbuktu had a population of 30,000.

The nomadic Tuareg tribe first set up their camel-skin and palm-mat tents there in the dry season, attracted by its location where the Niger River flows toward the southern brink of the Sahara Desert, prompting some to call it the point where "the camel meets the canoe." The tents gave way to sun-dried terracotta-colored mud brick buildings built in the Moorish style as traders, medical doctors, clerics, artists, poets and others settled there.

The city is on an old caravan route where Arab traders brought salt and other goods that reached North Africa's Mediterranean shores and traded it in Timbuktu for gold and Islamic books. It served as a major crossroads between Africa's Arab north and black West Africa, bringing together black Africans, Berbers, Arabs and the Tuareg people that consider Timbuktu their town. Its dynamism has been overlooked by the English expression "from here to Timbuktu" ? conjuring up an end-of-the-earth remoteness.

Islamist extremists decimated tourism in 2011 when three Europeans were taken hostage from a Timbuktu restaurant in November that year, frightening away visitors. In April 2012, Tuareg nationalist rebels seized control of Timbuktu from government troops. A day later Islamist insurgents elbowed their way into the city. They banned music, insisted women cover themselves and began carrying out public executions and amputations.

On Tuesday, Timbuktu was in control of French and Malian troops, including some 250 French paratroopers dropped from the sky. The extremists melted into the desert without firing a shot. Townspeople were jubilant at the city's liberation from intolerant Islamist extremists.

Senators reach agreement on immigration reform

(AP) ? A bipartisan group of leading senators has reached agreement on the principles of sweeping legislation to rewrite the nation's immigration laws.

The deal, which was to be announced at a news conference Monday afternoon, covers border security, guest workers and employer verification, as well as a path to citizenship for the 11 million illegal immigrants already in this country.

Although thorny details remain to be negotiated and success is far from certain, the development heralds the start of what could be the most significant effort in years toward overhauling the nation's inefficient patchwork of immigration laws.

President Barack Obama also is committed to enacting comprehensive immigration legislation and will travel to Nevada on Tuesday to lay out his vision, which is expected to overlap in important ways with the Senate effort.

The eight senators expected to endorse the new principles Monday are Democrats Charles Schumer of New York, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Robert Menendez of New Jersey and Michael Bennet of Colorado; and Republicans John McCain of Arizona, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and Jeff Flake of Arizona.

Several of these lawmakers have worked for years on the issue. McCain collaborated with the late Democratic Sen. Edward M. Kennedy on comprehensive immigration legislation pushed by then-President George W. Bush in 2007, only to see it collapse in the Senate when it couldn't get enough GOP support.

Now, with some Republicans chastened by the November elections which demonstrated the importance of Latino voters and their increasing commitment to Democrats, some in the GOP say this time will be different.

"What's changed, honestly, is that there is a new, I think, appreciation on both sides of the aisle ? including maybe more importantly on the Republican side of the aisle ? that we have to enact a comprehensive immigration reform bill," McCain said Sunday on ABC's "This Week."

"I think the time is right," McCain said.

The group claims a notable newcomer in Rubio, a potential 2016 presidential candidate whose conservative bona fides may help smooth the way for support among conservatives wary of anything that smacks of amnesty. In an opinion piece published Sunday in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Rubio wrote that the existing system amounts to "de facto amnesty," and he called for "commonsense reform."

According to documents obtained by The Associated Press, the senators will call for accomplishing four goals:

?Creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here, contingent upon securing the border and better tracking of people here on visas.

?Reforming the legal immigration system, including awarding green cards to immigrants who obtain advanced degrees in science, math, technology or engineering from an American university.

?Creating an effective employment verification system to ensure that employers do not hire illegal immigrants.

?Allowing more low-skill workers into the country and allowing employers to hire immigrants if they can demonstrate they couldn't recruit a U.S. citizen; and establishing an agricultural worker program.

The principles being released Monday are outlined on just over four pages, leaving plenty of details left to fill in. What the senators do call for is similar to Obama's goals and some past efforts by Democrats and Republicans, since there's wide agreement in identifying problems with the current immigration system. The most difficult disagreement is likely to arise over how to accomplish the path to citizenship.

In order to satisfy the concerns of Rubio and other Republicans, the senators are calling for the completion of steps on border security and oversight of those here on visas before taking major steps forward on the path to citizenship.

Even then, those here illegally would have to qualify for a "probationary legal status" that would allow them to live and work here ? but not qualify for federal benefits ? before being able to apply for permanent residency. Once they are allowed to apply they would do so behind everyone else already in line for a green card within the current immigration system.

That could be a highly cumbersome process, but how to make it more workable is being left to future negotiations. The senators envision a more streamlined process toward citizenship for immigrants brought here as children by their parents, and for agricultural workers.

The debate will play out at the start of Obama's second term, as he aims to spend the political capital afforded him by his re-election victory on an issue that has eluded past presidents and stymied him during his first term despite his promises to the Latino community to act.

"As the president has made clear for some time, immigration reform is an important priority and he is pleased that progress is being made with bipartisan support," a White House spokesman, Clark Stevens, said in a statement. "At the same time, he will not be satisfied until there is meaningful reform and he will continue to urge Congress to act until that is achieved."

For Republicans, the November elections were a stark schooling on the importance of Latino voters, who voted for Obama over Republican Mitt Romney 71 percent to 27 percent, helping ensure Obama's victory. That led some Republican leaders to conclude that supporting immigration reform with a path to citizenship has become a political imperative.

Apple reportedly readying 128GB "Ultimate" iPad 4 for launch

Apple reportedly readying 128GB

No sooner was support for 128GB NAND flash storage capacities found in iOS 6 beta 5, than reports pop up saying Apple is readying 128GB "ultimate" versions of the iPad 4 for launch. The news come by way of Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac, who typically has excellent sources on imminent product releases.

We?ve gotten word from sources that Apple is preparing to release (in some fashion) a single, additional iPad model. This would be a new SKU for the current fourth-generation iPad with Retina display line. At this point, we do not have pricing information, so it is definitely difficult to pinpoint exactly what this new iPad model is.

The code names are listed as P101 Ultimate and P103 Ultimate. Gurman stresses that it's not a new iPad, or iPad 5, or anything like that, simply a new, higher capacity version of the current iPad 4, in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular, and in both white and black.

In early 2008, Apple bumped the original iPhone from 8 to 16GB, so this type of new SKU launch isn't unprecedented. While it lacks the oomph of a completely new model, given that the iPad was refreshed in both March and October of 2012, it does at least give Apple something new on the market, and at 128GB, and presumably at the pricier end of the line-up, at the top of the market.

No word yet on 128GB versions of the iPad mini, or of the iPhone 5 or iPod touch 5.

Anyone compelled enough by big storage to consider a new purchase when/if he hit stores?

UFC on Fox 6?s Three Stars: Anthony Pettis, Ricardo Lamas and T.J. Grant

In the home of the 6-0 Chicago Blackhawks, the UFC had its sixth showing on Fox. In hockey's tradition, here are the Three Stars from the card.

No. 1 star ? Anthony Pettis: Once upon a time, Pettis was the WEC champion and had a shot at the UFC lightweight title. But then Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fought to a draw and required a rematch, and Pettis lost to Clay Guida. But with a nasty liver kick that took out Donald Cerrone, Pettis showed he was still worthy of that title shot.

No. 2 star ? Ricardo Lamas: Speaking of title shots, Lamas made a convincing case on Saturday night for the featherweight belt. He used punishing ground and pound to make Erik Koch's face explode on the way to a TKO. Lamas has four wins in a row, and has earned the shot to be the next fighter with a shot at the featherweight belt after this weekend's fight between Edgar and champion Jose Aldo.

No. 3 star -? T.J. Grant: The lightweight division is stacked, but Grant's showing on Saturday night showed another fighter creeping into the top ranks. He elbowed his way to a win over Matt Wiman.

These are Cagewriter's Three Stars. Who are yours? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Nintendo Wii U getting two title updates in spring and summer, to optimize UI speed

Nintendo's Wii U is getting two title updates in the coming months, both aimed at optimizing the sluggish speed of the console. The first of the two, launching in spring, will make software load more quickly, as well as adding Virtual Console directly to the Wii U (rather than accessed through the virtual Wii). The second, launching in summer, will get users back to the Wii U main menu more quickly. Both additions are more than welcome -- the Wii U's greatest flaw is its unbelievably slow user interface. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the news this morning during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, where he also unveiled news about Virtual Console heading to the Wii U, and an upcoming Miiverse update giving users access via smart devices.

Nintendo Outlines Its Vision for Wii U, Including Launching Virtual Console and How Miiverse and Second-Screen Gaming Features Will Continue to Evolve

NOTE: Multimedia available here

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unleashed Wii U news in an installment of Nintendo Direct today as he outlined Nintendo's future plans for the console. Iwata revealed how the Wii U launch lineup will be bolstered by a long list of top game franchises headed for the new console. These are games that longtime players and newcomers alike will love to play, and everyone will be experiencing them in new ways, thanks to the integrated second-screen experiences enabled by the Wii U GamePad controller. Iwata also detailed a number of enhancements designed to make the Wii U game experience more social, even if people are not playing in the same room.

"The fun of video games is not only just playing games, but also sharing experiences together with people - even though they live far away, their skill levels are different or their experience does not happen at the same time," Iwata said. "We want Wii U to be the system that brings everyone together."

Game News

Two Zelda Games: Eiji Aonuma, the producer of The Legend of Zelda series, revealed two entries in the series for Wii U.
Super Mario is on His Way: The Nintendo EAD Tokyo Software Development team that created the Super Mario Galaxy games for Wii and Super Mario 3D Land for Nintendo 3DS is working on a new 3D Mario action game for Wii U. The game is scheduled to be playable at this year's E3.
Buckle Up!: Nintendo is also working on a new installment of the hit Mario Kart franchise. This game is also planned to be playable at E3.
Yarn Yoshi: The team that created Kirby's Epic Yarn is hard at work on the first console game to feature Yoshi as the main character since 1998's Yoshi's Story for Nintendo 64. Takashi Tezuka, director of Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, is supervising the development of the new game, which is set in a fanciful world of yarn and textiles.
Wii Fit U Communities: New features coming to Wii Fit U include letting players create user communities on Miiverse from within the game. Community members can discuss exercises, BMI or weight changes and other health topics with other players as a way to encourage one another to reach their fitness goals. Similar functionality for other games is also planned.
Pikmin 3 Photos: The upcoming Pikmin 3 game includes a feature that lets players use the Wii U GamePad as a camera to share the same perspective as Pikmin and take close-up pictures of landscapes and creatures in the game and share them in Miiverse.
The Party Continues: A new installment in the Wii Party franchise is planned to launch this summer. The game features various play styles, including one that lets both players compete head-to-head using just the GamePad.
RPG Mashup: Nintendo has begun many collaborations with outside development partners to bring the best franchises and experiences to Wii U. In one such partnership, Nintendo and Atlus are working on a collaboration that features the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises. A video trailer for the game was shown in the Nintendo Direct.
A New Game from Monolith Soft: Tetsuya Takahashi and the team at Monolith Soft that worked on Xenoblade for Wii are working on a new game. A video trailer for the game was shown in the Nintendo Direct.
More on the Way: Iwata shared a new trailer for The Wonderful 101. That game and GAME & WARIO are scheduled to launch in the first half of 2013. Iwata also showed a new video for Bayonetta 2. That game and the new Super Smash Bros. installment are still on the way, but will need more development time before details can be revealed.
Virtual Console

Virtual Console for Wii U: A spring system update will add Virtual Console software to the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. The service will launch right after the spring update and will include a selection of NES and Super NES games, with Game Boy Advance games to be added in the future. The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii. People who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of $1 for NES games and $1.50 for Super NES games.
Classic Games for 30 Cents! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Famicom in Japan (which was known as the NES in the United States), Nintendo is making one NES or Super NES game available each month now through July at the anniversary price of just 30 cents. Each game will be available at that price for 30 days, and the first is the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.
Social and System Enhancements

Miiverse Expands to Smartphones: Starting this spring, people will be able to browse Miiverse from their smartphones. Initially the experience will be browser-based, but Nintendo plans to create a dedicated Miiverse app in the future.
System Updates: Two major updates are on the way, one in the spring and one in the summer. The updates will introduce a wide range of functionality, such as Virtual Console capabilities and shortening the time it takes users to launch software or return to the menu screen.
Remember that Wii U features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wiiu. Standalone versions of the trailers for The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, the new game from Monolith Soft and the collaboration featuring the Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei franchises can be found at http://www.youtube.com/nintendo.

President Obama's Second Term: Is the Economy ... - Yahoo! Finance

In his inauguration address Monday, President Barack Obama laid out his vision for the nation over the next four years, emphasizing his commitment to tackle climate change and immigration; defend entitlement programs and fight for gay equality and same-sex marriage. Obama alluded to gun control legislation and his foreign policy agenda when he referenced the Newtown, Conn., school shooting and said ?enduring security and lasting peace do not require perpetual war? but the president largely stayed away from both topics during the 18-minute address.

But the issues that defined the presidential election - Wall Street regulation, the budget deficit and jobs ? received brief mentions, a signal to policymakers that the administration may perceive other issues as more pressing and urgent.

The president?s decision to underscore his social policy agenda over fiscal matters was a deliberate move, according to Jim Rickards, author of ?Currency Wars? and senior managing director at Tangent Capital Partners, an investment bank based in New York City.

Obama ?does not want to wrestle? with tax reform, fiscal policy, and budget cutting in his second-term, Rickards says in an interview with The Daily Ticker. Instead, Obama wants to expand entitlement programs, not cut them, meaning four more years of trillion dollar deficits, he argues.

?There will be no grand bargain? on the budget, Rickards says. ?There will be mini fixes just to keep the whole thing from falling apart?Obama will leave it to the next president? to find solutions to these problems.

The economy has shown signs of improvement over the past 18 months, led by a rebound in the housing and job markets. The national unemployment rate stands at 7.8% -- still high by historical standards but down from its peak of 10% in 2009. Employers added 155,000 workers to their payrolls in December 2012.

Even as economy appears to be moving forward, fiscal policy remains accommodative. The Federal Reserve has pledged to keep short-term interest rates near zero until the jobless late falls to 6.5% -- which may not happen until 2015. Economists project U.S. economic growth to average a modest 2.5% to 3% this year.

Rickards believes the U.S. economy entered a depression in 2007 and could actually be experiencing another recession in the current economic cycle ? the same situation that President Franklin D. Roosevelt faced when he started his second of four presidential terms in 1937. Today's depression could last ?indefinitely? Rickards says, but it all depends on the economic measures pursued by the White House.

Whether or not the economy will top President Obama?s second-term to-do list will be determined when the president addresses Congress on Feb. 12.

Defense chief Panetta to clear women for combat roles

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's decision to lift the 20-year ban on women serving in combat will open some 237,000 combat-related positions to women. Initially, women will be assigned to combat communications, logistics and drivers. NBC's Jim Miklaszewski reports.

By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC News

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has decided to clear the way for women to serve in many?combat positions in the U.S. armed forces, a senior defense official told NBC News on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pentagon chief will announce on Thursday that he is eliminating the direct ground combat exclusion ? the Department of Defense policy that excluded women from assignment to units below the brigade level if the unit would be engaged in direct combat.

This will allow women to be assigned to select positions in ground combat units at the battalion level, opening approximately 237,000 individual jobs to women across service branches, including 5,000 positions for female Marines in ground combat elements.

"I support it. It reflects the reality of 21st century military operations," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate?Armed Services Committee, in anticipation of the announcement.?

"We are moving in the direction of women as infantry soldiers," one senior defense official said.?

Longstanding opponents of lifting the ban on women in combat lambasted the move as a show of "political correctness."

"The point of the military is to protect our country," said Penny Nance, President and CEO of?Concerned Women for America Legislative Action Committee, a conservative lobbying group. "Anything that distracts from that is detrimental. Our military cannot continue to choose social experimentation and political correctness over combat readiness. While this decision is not unexpected from this administration, it is still disappointing."

Panetta, who is expected to leave his position as Defense Secretary in February, will call on the military services to study whether it is possible to open all jobs to women, and the services must come back with their individual plans and recommendations by May 15, a senior defense official said. ?He will call for?all changes to be in place, and women serving in the new roles by Jan. 1,?2016.?

But a senior defense official who spoke to NBC News said they expect exceptions to remain. Elite Special Operations positions in Navy SEALS, Army Rangers, and Delta Force were likely to remain closed to women, the official said, while the Army is likely to open up jobs for female pilots in the elite 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment.?

Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., called the decision "historic."

"In fact, it's important to remember that in recent wars that lacked any true front lines, thousands of women already spent their days in combat situations serving side-by-side with their fellow male servicemembers," said Murray, who heads the Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee.?

In November, a group of women in the military and the non-profit American Civil Liberties Union sued the Pentagon over the policy of excluding women from combat roles. Their complaint argued that they were already serving in combat roles, but not getting recognized for it.

So far, 152 women have died while deployed in support of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and at least 958 have been wounded in action.?

"This is really the implementation of a policy that has been a reality for women for years," one senior defense official said.

According to the most recent Defense numbers, there are 1.4 million active duty members of the military, and nearly 15 percent of them are women.?

This new military-wide rule???distinct from a law???will replace the 1994 policy memo barring women in combat roles, which was signed by then-Secretary Les Aspin.

NBC News correspondent Kelly O'Donnell and NBC staff writer Kari Huus and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Unions suffer sharp decline in membership

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Union membership plummeted last year to the lowest level since the 1930s as cash-strapped state and local governments shed workers and unions had difficulty organizing new members in the private sector despite signs of an improving economy.

Government figures released Wednesday showed union membership declined from 11.8 percent to 11.3 percent of the workforce, another blow to a labor movement already stretched thin by battles in Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and other states to curb bargaining rights and weaken union clout.

Overall membership fell by about 400,000 workers to 14.4 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than half the loss, about 234,000, came from government workers, including teachers, firefighters and public administrators.

But unions also saw losses in the private sector even as the economy created 1.8 million new jobs in 2012. That membership rate fell from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent, a troubling sign for the future of organized labor, as job growth generally has taken place at nonunion companies.

"To employers, it's going to look like the labor movement is ready for a knockout punch," said Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. "You can't be a movement and get smaller."

Union membership was 13.2 percent in 1935 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act. Labor's ranks peaked in the 1950s, when about 1 of every 3 workers was in a union. By 1983, roughly 20 percent of U.S. workers were union members.

Losses in the public sector are hitting unions particularly hard because that has been one of the few areas where membership had grown over the past two decades. About 51 percent of union members work in government, where the rate of union membership is 37 percent, more than five times higher than in the private sector.

Until recently, there had been little resistance to unions organizing government workers. But that began to change when Republican Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin signed a law in 2011 eliminating most union rights for government workers. The state lost about 46,000 union members last year, the vast majority in the public sector.

The recession that began in 2008 also led to much deeper cuts in state and local government than any previous recession, according to a report this month from the Nelson Rockefeller Institute of Government at the State University of New York at Albany. Since August 2008, state government employment has declined by 135,000, while local government employment fell by 546,000.

Teachers unions were among the hardest hit, with the ranks of unionized public school teachers and educators falling by 123,000 last year. Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, the nation's largest teachers union, accused politicians who cut public education funding of "inflicting tremendous harm to our nation's 50 million students and risking our children's future."

Despite the steady membership decline, unions remain a potent political force because of the money they spend helping union-friendly candidates seeking public office. Unions spent more than $400 million during the 2012 election cycle to support President Barack Obama's re-election, keep a Democratic majority in the Senate and aid other state and local candidates.

But as more governors and state lawmakers target unions, labor leaders have been forced to spend more money fighting political skirmishes and less on organizing new members.

"Organizing is very expensive, and it gets fought now in the public sector as well as in the private sector," said Barry Hirsch, a labor economist at Georgia State University.

Dwindling membership means unions carry far less influence than they used to in setting a benchmark for wages and benefits that might be followed at nonunion companies. Unions are already gearing up to defeat Republican governors in Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where they fear more anti-union measures could crop up soon.

Union officials blame membership losses on the lingering effects of the recession, as well as GOP governors and state lawmakers who have sought to weaken union rights.

"Our still-struggling economy, weak laws and political as well as ideological assaults have taken a toll on union membership and in the process have also imperiled economic security and good, middle-class jobs," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

In Indiana, where a new right-to-work law took effect last March, the state lost about 56,000 union members. The law prohibits unions from requiring workers to pay union fees, even if they benefit from a collective bargaining agreement. Michigan lawmakers approved a similar measure in December.

Another problem for unions is an aging membership that is not being replaced by younger members. By age, the union membership rate was highest among workers age 55 to 64 (14.9 percent) and lowest among those 16 to 24 (4.2 percent).

In New York, the state with the highest union density, nearly one-quarter of the workforce belonged to a union. North Carolina had the lowest at 2.9 percent.

Among full-time wage and salary workers, union members in 2012 had median weekly earnings of $943, while those who were not union members earned $742.

Get Auto Insurance Tips And Information | Siben & Siben Long ...

If you own a car then you need to buy auto insurance. Before you purchase auto insurance you should research all of the different insurance plans available and figure out which plan best suits your needs. When it comes to buying auto insurance, the more information you have, the better off you will be. This article contains a number of auto insurance tips.

Having an expensive car or car that is considered a sports car will often increase the price one pays for auto insurance. If one does not like the sound of that then they should consider getting a different type of car. It will not only save them insurance money but often money off the car itself.

Be open to finding great deals. The rule of thumb is never to pick a car insurance company based on their fancy website. Even less well known insurance companies can provide just as much coverage for less. Don?t let companies trick you into accepting their overpriced rates just because of their ?reputation.?

Remember that bad credit can hurt your auto insurance rates even if you are a good driver. If you have high auto insurance rates as a result of bad credit then feel free to get those rates reassessed quarterly as your credit improves. It is just one easy way to save money on auto insurance.

Keep car insurance in mind when buying a new car. Different cars have different premiums. You might have your heart set on an SUV, but you might want to check just how much it is going to cost to insure before you spend money on it. Always do your insurance research before buying a new vehicle.

When on the hunt for car insurance, cut out the middle man to save money. Shopping online, directly through the company website, is likely to save you the most money. Insurance companies that allow you to buy online are fairly reputable and it is cheaper because you are not using an agent.

If your car is not particularly valuable, go ahead and select the minimum amount of liability, when you purchase auto insurance. This is the bare-bones coverage legally mandated by your state. While minimum liability provides very limited financial assistance when you make a claim, your needs will probably be modest if your car is modest, too. Minimum liability coverage is the cheapest insurance that you can get.

Gather witnesses when you are in an accident. Make sure you collect information from anyone who may have seen the accident. Ask for name, address, phone number, and details of what they saw. This will help your insurance company decide who was at fault, and who should pay for the claim.

Lawyer

If you become seriously injured in an auto accident, consider hiring a lawyer to deal with the other party?s insurance company. Many parts of the process, such as determining the facts of the accident and liability, are more easily completed with the help of a law firm. In addition, a lawyer may be more pushy with the insurance company about getting things done.

When looking at liability coverage for your insurance, you should consider how many assets you have. This is important because if you have a lot of personal assets and you are at fault in an accident, then the lawyer from the other party may go after your personal assets to cover all the other necessary bills for the other party.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, everyone who owns a car needs to buy quality auto insurance. When shopping around for an auto insurance policy, it is important to educate yourself on the different types of policies available so that you can choose wisely and make a good decision. Apply the advice from this article to help you find the perfect auto insurance.

Using Video Content to Increase Brand Awareness | Social Media ...

If you are a business owner, you have undoubtedly found great marketing power on the Internet. It is no secret that some of the easiest, most effective ways to get a strong customer base is by marketing online. It can, and does, reach millions of people in an instant and is always available. The Internet is also fantastic, as it is inexpensive (and often completely free) to do so. With so many benefits to online marketing, most business owners are ?jumping on board? and experiencing greater success. A lot of business owners opt for creating a blog and utilizing social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. But what about YouTube? It is a site that is probably a little less used than the other sites for these purposes, but it has just as much power to promote your company brand as any of the other sites, if not more.

Creativity is a Must

The most important thing with all of these types of videos is to get your brand well known. For that reason, another great thing to do on YouTube is to view other videos that are similar to yours or are in the same line of business as your company. Post a nice, supportive comment and then post your own video as a response. Doing this helps increase the number of viewers who will see your video, as you are now tapping into that video?s viewer base as well. One good thing about producing your own video, is that you can do anything you want to. You have no boundries or limitations. This leaves it open for you to get creative and specifically target your audience.

How do You Utilize YouTube?

So what kind of videos can you post to increase brand awareness for your company? Obviously, the most basic and straight-forward video is a ?how-to? tutorial clip, where you instruct customers on how to use your product and why it is such a great product to own. Smart YouTube users know that the video probably shouldn?t be longer than two minutes or so. As with any type of advertising, getting straight to the point is the best way to keep interest and be effective. Remember that you are competing for viewing time.

How about creating a video where you show creative ways to use your product? Other successful businesses have created humorous marketing campaigns through company YouTube channels that have drawn thousands of viewers and created a cult following. The key is to make your video memorable, and simple, (unless you have experience and the resources to make a more professional production). If you?re looking for a way to validate your brand, have an expert (or even celebrity, which works surprisingly well) discuss the benefits of your company and its brand. Support from these individuals goes a long way with the public. Another type of testimonial you can record is from loyal customers who have used your product and love it. Have you ever noticed that the best sales people are the ones who truly love the product they sell or are truly committed to the cause they advocate? Finding loyal customers can have the same ?sell power? in a well-put-together YouTube clip. Give it a try and see how it works for your company?s brand awareness and company success.

And of course, you can do a video that is simply for entertainment value. It?s probably not much of a surprise to you that entertainment, especially comedic entertainment, can go a long way when it comes to customer approval. People love to be entertained, and with a clever ?advertisement? through a YouTube video, your company?s ?fame? can become widespread. This can do great things for your business.

So while you are doing your online marketing through blogs and other social media sites, be sure to get some good videos up on YouTube as well. You will most likely be surprised at how much success you experience as a result.

Wisconsin Humane Society urging pet owners to be proactive ... - WITI

Posted on: 5:29 pm, January 20, 2013, by Katie DeLong, updated on: 08:11pm, January 20, 2013

pets

MILWAUKEE (WITI) ? With temperatures falling and wind chill advisories in effect for early this week, the Wisconsin Humane Society is urging pet owners to take proactive measures to keep pets safe.?

  • Keep your animals inside. Even Northern Breed dogs like Malamutes and Chow Chows need heated, comfortable shelter away from bitter cold temperatures and high winds to stay safe. Only take your dogs outside long enough to relieve him/herself and keep cats indoors at all times.
  • If you see spilled antifreeze, clean it up. The sweet taste of this lethal poison actually attracts animals. Use more animal-friendly formulations of products if possible, such as propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.
  • Always keep your dog leashed on snow and ice. Despite their powerful noses dogs often lose their scent in the snow and ice, and can easily become lost.
  • Never leave your companion animal alone in the car, especially in cold weather. The car can quickly become a refrigerator and your beloved animal can freeze to death.
  • When your dog comes in out of the rain, snow or ice, thoroughly wipe off his or her legs, feet and stomach. Salt and antifreeze can kill dogs, so it is very important that these harmful substances are wiped off before your dog has a chance to lick them off his or her own paws. The Wisconsin Humane Society sells booties that can be worn by dogs to help prevent salt and antifreeze from sticking to paw pads. Also, pay special attention to your canine?s paw pads. Snow and ice caught between the pads can make them bleed.
  • Before you start your car, beep your horn several times. Cats often look for warm places to rest, and the hood of your car or even underneath the vehicle might be options for them. By honking your horn, cats will be alerted to run away.
  • The cold weather typically means the furnace is cranked up. It?s dangerous for animals to rest under or near a radiator or other heating system. Consider placing an appropriate cover that is especially made for heating systems so animals can be safe from these areas. Also, find a warm place for your furry friend to sleep ? away from heaters, but not near a cold draft.

Dempsey saves the day as Spurs draw Man United

By ROB HARRIS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:21 p.m. ET Jan. 20, 2013

LONDON (AP) -Clint Dempsey scored a second crucial goal of the season for Tottenham against Manchester United on Sunday, striking in stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw against the Premier League leaders.

The United States forward, who gave Tottenham its first win at United in 23 years in September, canceled out Robin van Persie's first-half header to give the fourth-place hosts something to show for their dominance at a snowy White Hart Lane.

"Before (this season) I'd never scored against them, so it's good to help the team get results," said Dempsey, who joined from Fulham in August. "We've got a win and a draw now (against United)."

United remains top but its lead has been trimmed to five points this weekend after second-place Manchester City beat Fulham 2-0 on Saturday.

Despite salvaging a point, Tottenham fell four points behind third-place Chelsea after its London rival beat Arsenal 2-1 earlier in the day.

While United managed just five shots, Tottenham scored with its 25th shot in the third minute of stoppage time.

Dempsey swept in the winner after being set up by Aaron Lennon, who had pounced after goalkeeper David de Gea punched a shot by Benoit Assou-Ekotto inadvertently to him.

"They kept pumping the ball in the box and got their reward. You'd have thought we would have dealt with it better," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We should have killed them off on the counterattack in the second half. It was the final ball that was letting us down."

United rarely threatened Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris after Van Persie rose in the 25th minute to meet Tom Cleverley's cross and head in his 22nd goal since joining from Arsenal in August.

"It was a good build up from Danny to Thomas and then Robin did what he has been doing all season," Ferguson said. "He notched another goal."

But Ferguson turned his fury on an assistant referee for not awarding a penalty after Wayne Rooney, a surprise substitute who only came on in the second half, was caught by Steven Caulker.

"It was definitely a penalty - he has put his leg right in there," Ferguson said. "The linesman (Simon Beck) is facing it. I thought he had a very poor game, the linesman. I thought he was disappointing.

"We have got that history with him. He never gave offside with (then-Chelsea striker Didier) Drogba at Old Trafford (in 2010) when he was three yards offside. Everyone remembers that. I certainly do."

But United had been heavily reliant on center backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, as well as De Gea's blocks, to protect its lead.

"We dominated the whole game, played well and deserved to win to be fair," Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "We had 60 per cent possession against United ... and should have won.

"Champions like United have to go through moments like this but I think we deserved this last-minute goal."

The four points Spurs have claimed off United this season are the most since beating them twice in the 1989-90 campaign.

Despite being in control from the start, Tottenham missed the goal scoring threat of Emmanuel Adebayor, who is at the African Cup of Nations with Togo.

But danger was being created down the right flank by Aaron Lennon, who came close to scoring after 13 minutes when he burst into the penalty area and unleashed a shot that De Gea pushed away.

Van Persie's goal against the run of play didn't dampen Tottenham's spirits, with Gareth Bale's deflected shot saved by De Gea before halftime and the Wales winger also curled over after the break.

Dempsey's first chance to equalize came in the 52nd after Mousa Dembele had withstood two challenges before slipping the ball through to the striker, whose close-range shot was blocked by De Gea's foot.

"I couldn't believe he saved that," Dempsey said. "I was going to celebrate."

But while Tottenham continued to pile on the pressure, the end products lacked venom with Dempsey also seeing a tame shot easily saved on the hour.

A decisive intervention by Ferdinand prevented Jermain Defoe breaking through on goal after being released by Lennon and the center back got his head in the way to deflect a shot from Bale wide.

But United's resistance broke down in stoppage time, just when Ferguson's United has been accustomed to stunning opponents with goals.

"Tottenham worked their socks off, you have to give them credit," Ferguson said.

United headed from the stadium to the airport and an overnight flight to Qatar for warm-weather training.

"We can get the sun cream out hopefully and get out on the beach and relax a bit," United midfielder Michael Carrick said. "It's a busy season and there are busy times ahead. It's about recuperating."
